Because tolerance and acceptance are always “in,” especially on the job
You may be wondering what social responsibility in the corporate world is. Corporate social responsibility is a company’s interest in and obligation to fostering a fair workplace environment that promotes equality. It also promotes the welfare of the surrounding communities. Why does that matter to you, as a business owner or manager? Well, social responsibility is a big deal these days.
And, with people gaining the confidence to represent so many different types of lifestyles, the push for tolerance is at an all-time high. What can you do to ensure your workplace is caring for the people and community around you? Here are a few tips.
1. Meet with your employees
Hosting a meeting to discuss your company’s policy on social responsibility is a great first step. The goal here is to address and set up your employees’ expectations. That way, they are fully aware of the company’s stance, and they can recognize whether or not they are breaking policy. This will also show employees how seriously you take this.
2. Set up a service day
Get your employees on board and set up a day to serve your community for a cause. It could be an awareness run, you could volunteer at a particular event, or you could even set up the event yourselves. It’ll take a lot of manpower, organization, and passion, but it’ll be worth it.
3. Walk the walk
Your workers take cues from their management team on how to act in the office. You set the standards for what is appropriate, and then you live it out. Representing your company with your morals through example is the most beneficial thing you can do for your office. If they hear you say one thing but see you act differently, it’ll kill your credibility and crush your mission.
4. Found an organization for a social cause
It could be personal to you, one of your workers (with their permission), or just a cause your company feels strongly about as a whole — but starting an organization is a great way to get involved. Your workers will see your commitment to greatness, acceptance, and tolerance which could inspire them to be more open and understanding. Or, you might just make a member of your own team feel more at home by committing to this cause.
Reap the benefits
Not only can you feel great about knowing the impact your business has on the community around you, but you might also build a stronger workplace. Working together for a cause or toward a common goal fosters teamwork and builds stronger bonds with coworkers.
